CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
|
As the new Chairman for the Tulane University Department of Anesthesiology, I am excited about our future. We intend to graduate anesthesiologists to enter the workforce as leaders in their new departments. We will emphasize the skills necessary for management of the perioperative process in addition to excellent didactics and clinical instruction.
Many new graduates enter the workforce without an understanding of practice management issues that physician leaders must have regarding hospital contracting, hospital subsidies, professional contracting, and the current discussions about national quality initiatives and physician reimbursement. Management of the perioperative process, especially operating room management, is a skill valued by anesthesia departments nationally. At Tulane our goal will be to prepare our graduates to be successful with the transition from a physician in training to a physician leader, capable of meeting these demands.
Our Departmental research will incorporate the unique talents of our physicians within our various sections in Pediatric, Obstetric and Regional Anesthesia in order to initiate multi-disciplinary projects. In addition to our internal research efforts, we have established collaborative relationships to advance multi-departmental research across Tulane University with the departments of Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Structural and Cellular Biology, the School of Public Health division of Biostatistics, and the Primate Center.
Our Tulane faculties are young and energetic with an enthusiasm for teaching in the operating room and in the classroom. The departmental size and dynamics promote a close professional relationship between the residents and staff. Residents that enter our program are assigned mentors that work to promote the core competencies and success during training. With these inherent strengths and relationships in place, I am confident that our program will be able to achieve our future vision.
