EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
The Department of Anesthesiology Research section is excited about our new direction and scope. We have initiated collaborative relationships with many departments within Tulane University including the Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and The National Primate Research Center.

These relationships will direct new translational research on the faculty, resident and medical student levels with collaborative efforts from the faculty, graduate and undergraduate students of the corresponding departments.

Our CA-3 residents this year will be participating in our first annual required research projects. These projects will encompass original research, reviews of the literature, or case report discussions. Each resident is assigned to a faculty research advisor who directs them in developing and completing their projects. All projects are expected to be publishable in a peer reviewed journal.

We actively encourage and participate in multiple national and regional level conferences such as the American Society of Anesthesiology, the Louisiana Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Gulf Atlantic Anesthesia Residents Research Conference (GAARRC). Our residents have presented at GAARRC for many years and have won awards for their presentations.

We are pleased to be expanding our section with a Clinical Research Coordinator and have a three-year strategic plan going forward to expand our research efforts on multiple levels. Our department is the anchor for one of the largest anesthesia clinical registries in the country. We will begin a comprehensive analysis and publication of this data in the coming year. It is our vision to also be known as a center for clinical research trials fostering relationships in industry, the NIH and the FDA.

Ongoing areas of research include the following:

Percutaneous Catheter Placement for Veno-Veno Bypass in Liver Transplantation

An Open-Label, Multiple-Dose, Multiple-Day, Non-Randomized, Single-Arm Safety Study of Repeat-Doses of DIC075V (Intravenous Diclofenac Sodium) In Patients With Acute Post-Operative Pain

Oxygen Saturation Monitoring on the General Care Floor(GCF): An Observational Study of Repetitive Reductions in Airflow

EVAC Use in the OR: A Randomized, Clinical Study to Evaluate the Content of Fluid Extracted from the Endotracheal Tube Cuff using Intermittent and Continuous Suctioning during Surgery

The Influence of Perioperative Clinical Guidelines on the Efficiency of the Preoperative Process
