As the new chairman, I am truly excited about the future of the Tulane Department of Anesthesiology. The School of Medicine has recently inaugurated a cutting edge peri-operative Simulation Center in the Murphy Oil Building that sets a new standard for anesthesiology education in the region. Our residency program has received a three-year unconditional accreditation and is poised to grow in size. The department is thriving! Other recent accomplishments include: • A new relationship with the A.B. Freeman School of Business that provides our residents with the opportunity to obtain an MBA during their residency. Our department is the first in the nation to offer a combined Anesthesia Residency - MBA program. • Research is alive in our department. We have a dedicated Director of Research, Sabrina Bent, M.S., M.D., and a Clinical Research Coordinator, Stephanie Russo, M.P.H. There are multiple projects underway and grants that have been submitted. • We are establishing a relationship with the Union Hospital of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science & Technology www.hust.edu.cn/english/ in Wuhan, China with the goal of forming an international exchange for resident education and collaborative research. • We are establishing fellowships in Obstetric Anesthesia and Practice Management and plan to begin accepting fellowship applications for the 2010-2011 academic year. • We have hired new faculty from across the country with subspecialty training in cardiac, regional and obstetric anesthesia and our faculty numbers are still growing. • We are updating the educational resourses in our department to include a fully integrated teleconferencing tool for teaching simultaneously at both the Downtown New Orleans and Lakeside campuses. To date, we have received support from many alumni for which we are very grateful. This assistance is used to help our department grow and mature.
